Vikram Betal Ki Kahani" is a collection of stories that revolve around King Vikramaditya and the clever spirit of Betal. In each story, King Vikramaditya, the righteous and wise ruler, is tasked with bringing a betel leaf-bearing spirit (Betal) to the sage. However, the spirit tells a riddle during their journey, and King Vikram has to answer the riddle. If he answers wrong or speaks before the story ends, the spirit flies away. Through these stories, various morals and lessons about wisdom, justice, and life are taught.
Once upon a time, there was a mighty king named Vikramaditya. He ruled over the kingdom of Ujjain, a land filled with prosperity, peace, and happiness. King Vikramaditya was known not only for his strength but for his great wisdom and fairness. People from all corners of the kingdom admired him and would seek his judgment in difficult matters. Despite all his accomplishments, King Vikramaditya had one wish – to learn more and become even wiser. He always believed that no matter how great you are, there is always room for more learning.
One day, an ancient sage came to the king with a unique task. The sage told King Vikram that only by capturing a ghost named Betal, who lived in the dark forest, could he learn the true meaning of wisdom. Betal was no ordinary ghost; he was a clever, mischievous spirit who loved to tell riddles. The sage told Vikram that if he could bring Betal to him, he would be rewarded with wisdom that no one in the world had ever known.
Vikramaditya, curious and eager to learn, agreed to the sage’s challenge. The king set off on his journey to the dark forest, where the ghost was said to reside. The forest was dense, with twisted trees and a thick mist that made it difficult to see. But Vikram was not afraid. He was determined to capture the spirit and bring him back. As he ventured deep into the forest, he suddenly saw a strange sight. A tree stood in the middle of the forest, and hanging from one of its branches was a ghost, draped in a white cloth.
Betal, the spirit, spoke, "Oh, mighty King Vikram, you have finally found me. But I warn you, capturing me is not an easy task. If you wish to take me with you, I will tell you a riddle. If you answer it wrong, you will never see me again. But if you answer correctly, you will lose your chance to catch me."
Vikram, who was no stranger to challenges, accepted the ghost’s offer. Betal began to tell him the first riddle.
Story 1: The King and the Prince
Betal said, "Once upon a time, there was a king who had a son. This prince was very dear to his father, and he loved him deeply. The prince, however, was not a wise ruler. One day, the king fell ill, and the prince was asked to take over the kingdom in his place. But the prince was afraid. He had no experience and did not know what to do."
Vikram listened carefully, wondering where the story was headed. Betal continued, "The prince turned to his father and asked, 'Father, what should I do to become a good king?' The king replied, 'A good king listens to his people, takes advice from the wise, and always does what is right.'"
"But," said Betal with a smirk, "the prince still did not understand. He thought that ruling a kingdom was all about wealth and power. Soon, the prince’s decisions caused harm to his people, and the kingdom fell into ruin."
Vikram looked at Betal, who was floating before him like a mysterious mist. "Now, King Vikram," said the spirit, "tell me, what should the prince have done to avoid such a fate?"
Vikram thought deeply. He knew the answer. "The prince should have listened to his people, relied on wise advisors, and always followed the path of truth and justice."
Betal laughed. "You are correct, King Vikram. But remember, even the greatest king cannot succeed alone. He must surround himself with wise counsel and make decisions that are best for his people."
Vikram was pleased with his answer, but as soon as he spoke, Betal vanished, laughing in the wind. King Vikram knew that he had passed the first test, but he understood that the journey ahead would be filled with many more riddles and challenges.
Story 2: The Wise Merchant
Betal reappeared, his ghostly figure glowing in the mist. "King Vikram," he said, "listen to the next story. Once there was a wise merchant who lived in a small village. This merchant was known for his honesty and fairness. One day, a man came to him and said, 'I have a treasure hidden in the forest. If you help me find it, I will share it with you.' The merchant agreed and went with the man to the forest."
As Betal told the story, Vikram followed closely. "They searched the forest for days, but could not find the treasure. Tired and exhausted, the merchant asked the man, 'Why are we looking for this treasure? What is so special about it?'"
The man replied, 'The treasure holds great wealth, but it also brings great danger. It has caused many lives to be lost.'"
Vikram thought for a moment before Betal continued, "The merchant, realizing the danger, said, 'I will not help you find this treasure. It is not worth the risk.' The man was furious but left the merchant alone."
Betal paused, his voice growing serious. "Now, King Vikram, what would you have done in the merchant's place?"
Vikram thought about it. "I would have done as the merchant did. Wealth gained by causing harm is not true wealth. It is better to live a peaceful and honest life than to chase after riches that come at a cost."
Betal smiled. "Correct, King Vikram. You have learned that true wealth is not in gold or jewels, but in wisdom and virtue."
Story 3: The Honest Farmer
Betal then spoke again. "Once there was a poor farmer who worked hard every day to earn his living. One day, he found a sack of gold coins lying by the road. He knew that it was not his and decided to take it to the king. Upon hearing this, the king was surprised and asked the farmer why he had brought the money instead of keeping it for himself."
The farmer replied, "My Lord, I have worked hard all my life, but I have always believed that what is not mine should not be kept. I wanted to return this money to its rightful owner."
Betal continued, "The king, impressed by the farmer's honesty, rewarded him with a piece of land. The farmer became rich, not because of the gold, but because of his honesty and integrity."
Vikram nodded, understanding the depth of the lesson. "The farmer knew that honesty is the best policy. By doing the right thing, he was blessed with even more than he could have imagined."
Finally, Betal laughed and said, "King Vikram, you have answered my riddles correctly. You have shown wisdom beyond your years. I will now return to my peaceful place in the forest, but remember this: True wisdom lies not in wealth, but in the choices you make every day."
King Vikram smiled, knowing that he had learned much from Betal's stories. As he walked back to his kingdom, he realized that each story had taught him something valuable. Wisdom, honesty, and justice were the true treasures of life.
