रमेश एक छोटे शहर का लड़का था, जिसे खाना बहुत पसंद था। वह खासकर चिकन बिरयानी का दीवाना था। उसके मोहल्ले में जब भी कोई दावत होती, रमेश सबसे पहले पहुँचता। लेकिन रमेश की माँ शाकाहारी थीं और घर में मांसाहार की मनाही थी।
रमेश अक्सर अपने दोस्तों के साथ होटल में जाकर बिरयानी खाता था और माँ से छिपाता था। एक दिन उसकी माँ को पता चल गया। उन्होंने रमेश से बहुत नाराज़गी जताई। उस दिन रमेश का मन बहुत उदास हो गया।
रमेश की माँ ने समझाया, “बेटा, मुझे तुम्हारे नॉन वेज खाने से आपत्ति नहीं है, लेकिन चोरी-छिपे खाना गलत है।” रमेश को बात समझ में आई। उसने माँ से माफी मांगी और वादा किया कि आगे से वह कोई भी बात नहीं छिपाएगा।
कुछ दिन बाद रमेश ने माँ से निवेदन किया, “माँ, एक बार आप मेरे साथ होटल चलो, आपको मैं अपने पसंदीदा चिकन बिरयानी की दावत देता हूँ।” माँ ने मुस्कराते हुए कहा, “अगर तू मेरे साथ सब्जी वाला पुलाव खाएगा, तो मैं तेरे साथ चिकन बिरयानी खाने चलूँगी।”
माँ-बेटे दोनों होटल गए, एक-दूसरे के स्वाद का सम्मान किया और उस दिन से दोनों ने एक नया नियम बनाया – हर रविवार को एक नई चीज़ साथ में खानी है, चाहे वह शाकाहारी हो या मांसाहारी।

दूसरी कहानी: मुर्गा शेरू की आख़िरी उड़ान
गाँव के बाहर एक छोटा सा खेत था जहाँ एक बूढ़ा किसान, रामदीन, अपनी पत्नी और कुछ जानवरों के साथ रहता था। उसके पास एक मुर्गा था, जिसका नाम था शेरू। शेरू बहुत समझदार और बहादुर था। वह हर सुबह सबसे पहले बांग देकर सबको उठाता था।
शेरू को रामदीन बहुत प्यार करता था। लेकिन जब गाँव में त्योहार आया और लोग मुर्गे की डिमांड करने लगे, तो रामदीन के कुछ रिश्तेदार बोले, “शेरू अब बूढ़ा हो गया है, इसे काट दो। त्योहार में स्वाद बनेगा।”
रामदीन का दिल टूटा। शेरू की आँखों में चमक थी, मानो वह जानता हो कि क्या होने वाला है। एक रात वह धीरे से पिंजरे से निकल गया और दूर जंगल की ओर उड़ चला। उसकी उड़ान लंबी नहीं थी, लेकिन उसकी आज़ादी की चाहत बड़ी थी।
अगली सुबह जब रामदीन ने देखा कि शेरू नहीं है, तो वह बहुत रोया। उसे समझ आया कि जानवर भी भावनाएँ रखते हैं। उसने अपने खेत में अब से कभी भी किसी जानवर को नहीं काटने का फैसला किया।
गाँव में सबको शेरू की कहानी पता चली। बच्चों ने उसके नाम पर एक छोटी सी मूर्ति बनाई, और हर साल उसके नाम की ‘शेरू दिवस’ मनाने लगे।

तीसरी कहानी: कबाब की खुशबू और दोस्ती की परीक्षा
मुंबई के एक छोटे मोहल्ले में दो दोस्त रहते थे – अली और रोहन। अली के घर में मांसाहारी खाना बनता था, और रोहन के घर में सख्त मना था। फिर भी दोनों की दोस्ती गहरी थी। वे साथ स्कूल जाते, क्रिकेट खेलते और साथ पढ़ाई करते।
एक दिन अली के घर में खास कबाब बने। अली ने सोचा कि रोहन को भी खिलाए, क्योंकि वह हमेशा कहता था कि उसने कभी नॉन वेज नहीं खाया। अली ने बिना बताए एक कबाब उसे दे दिया। रोहन को बहुत स्वाद आया लेकिन जब उसने सच जाना, तो वह बहुत नाराज़ हुआ।
वह बोला, “तू मेरा दोस्त था, तूने मुझसे झूठ क्यों बोला?” अली ने कहा, “मुझे लगा तुझे अच्छा लगेगा, मैं माफ़ी चाहता हूँ।” रोहन ने गुस्से में दोस्ती तोड़ दी।
कुछ दिन बाद रोहन बीमार पड़ गया। अली उसके लिए दवा और खाना लेकर रोज आता रहा। उसकी माँ ने देखा कि अली सच में परवाह करता है। जब रोहन ठीक हुआ, तो उसने देखा कि अली बिना कहे उसकी सेवा करता रहा।
